Ryan Castle: You're listening to Level Ten Leaders Power Tips, and I'm your host, Ryan Castle. Today's tip comes from Beth Jacob, President and Co-CEO of vChief. This power tip is on: stop talking, stop moving, leadership momentum. Let's dive in.
Beth Jacob: You know how it is. Leaders, we can get stuck in analysis paralysis. I absolutely fall into this category. I want my spreadsheets to have spreadsheets. I want an if-then analysis, and all of my backup plans have backup plans.
But recently, I got a reminder that progress doesn't always come from theory. It comes from action.
On vacation, my kids wanted to try surfing. Their instructor gave them about ten minutes of practice on the sand and then boom — they were in the water. He didn't lecture and pontificate on the perfect way to catch a wave. He never waited until they were perfectly prepared. He knew the real learning would only happen once they were trying, failing, adjusting, and trying again.
That same principle applies when we have a leadership gap on our teams. Too often we'll burn three to six months running job ads, building shortlists, interviewing, negotiating, all of those things, while our business is stalling because that seat isn't filled. The rest of the leadership team is still working on trying to fill it.
So what if, instead of waiting for a perfect, you got someone in that seat this week? An experienced leader who can start rowing with you right away? You'll learn faster, adapt faster, and keep momentum instead of losing it.
Just like falling off a surfboard, whatever strategies you're working on likely won't get it right the first time. But you're moving, and that motion is what creates learning, growth, and sustainability in our businesses.
So if you're sitting in a Level Ten talking about the same gap week after week, stop theorizing. Get someone in the water now and see how much faster you move your business towards its goals.
