Ryan Castle: You're listening to Level 10 Leaders Power Tips, and I'm your host, Ryan Castle. Today we have another great tip from Jessica Sanchez, the founder and CEO of Daughters of Both Sons. Jessica's power tip is on moving from survival to systems: how to build community impact with limited resources. Let's dive in.
Jessica Sanchez: Something I learned from building a nonprofit from the ground up is that burnout usually doesn't come from a lack of passion. It comes from trying to become the entire infrastructure for a mission by yourself. When you care deeply about people, especially in community work or the service space, it's easy to start operating in constant crisis mode. You answer every call, you solve every problem, you carry every emotional weight, and you convince yourself that slowing down means letting people down.
I hit a point where I realized I wasn't just leading the mission anymore. I was trying to hold every single piece of it together personally: the partnerships, the operations, the outreach, the events, the people, the emergencies, everything. And from the outside it can look productive because things are moving. But internally, you're building an organization that depends entirely on your exhaustion.
What changed for me was understanding that sustainable leadership requires systems, not constant sacrifice. Structure is not the enemy of passion. Boundaries are not selfish. Delegation is not weakness. If the mission can only survive when one person is overwhelmed, then the mission itself becomes fragile. The biggest shift I made was moving from survival-based leadership into systems-based leadership: creating processes, building support, and letting other people carry responsibility with me instead of trying to save everything alone.
Because building long-term impact is not built by the person who burns themselves out the fastest. It's built by leaders who create something sustainable enough to keep serving people long after the crisis moment passes.
