Ryan Castle: You’re listening to Level 10 Leaders Power Tips, and I’m your host, Ryan Castle. Today’s tip comes from Kyle Danner, Certified EOS Implementer at EOS Worldwide. Kyle’s power tip is on the two things everyone needs. Let’s dive in.

Kyle Danner: Running your company on EOS® is about building your leadership team to become great leaders and managers themselves, so they can help others in the business be great leaders and managers too.

When teaching, facilitating, and coaching LMA, that is Leadership, Management, Accountability, we must remember that there are two things every human being in this world needs. Everyone. We need to feel safe and we need to matter.

Let’s take them one at a time. The need to feel safe is all about psychological safety. It is about people being able to bring their authentic selves to work, letting their guard down, and raising issues without fear of being attacked by another teammate or even the owner and visionary. It is that vulnerability based trust Patrick Lencioni writes about in The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, which is our model in EOS® for team health.

That psychological safety is essential. It is foundational. If people are afraid to raise issues, those issues and mistakes go unsolved. That puts efficiency, money, and even people’s lives at risk. So the need to feel safe, that psychological safety, is the first need.

The second is the need to matter. This is about the need to be seen, to be heard, and to know that our voice is important. When we feel like we do not matter, that our voices are not heard, we do not share our best ideas. We hold back our best thinking. Ultimately, that holds the team back and the entire company. Knowing that we matter is especially important in healthy conflict. By healthy conflict, I mean attacking the issue, not each other.

When we know we have been heard, that our thoughts, ideas, and suggestions have been taken to heart by the team, even if a decision is made that we do not necessarily agree with, we are much more likely to support it because we knew our voice mattered.

So remember, when everyone in your company feels safe and they know they matter, you have a solid foundation to lead and manage and get everything you want from your business.
